What is the difference between gracie barra and gracie academy

Gracie Barra is a worldwide community of Jiu-Jitsu instructors, students and athletes. Our organization is built by over schools in six continents. The class structure is the trademark of all Gracie Barra Schools. Classes start on time and adhere to a standardized curriculum and class structure.

As a student, you know up front what is expected of you and have a clear understanding of what to expect from your instructors and training partners.

The consistency of this structure combined with the creativity and innovation of our devoted instructors blend perfectly to facilitate your progress. Meet Prof. Some instructors award black belts to themselves, for instance, or have questionable criteria when it comes to promoting their students. This is why most accomplished Jiu-Jitsu players will always note who awarded them their black belt.

Marcos Nevel received his black belt in from Master Royler Gracie. There are few names in Jiu-Jitsu that are as respected as Royler Gracie. The answer requires a brief history lesson. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is actually a modified version of Judo. One of his students was Grandmaster Carlos Gracie, who along with his brother Helio is the co-founder of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as we know it.

Carlos taught Judo to his four brothers, but Helio had to modify the techniques due to his being smaller and weaker than the rest. This created the fundamental principle of BJJ: Always practice technique assuming your opponent is bigger and stronger than you. But that's true of a lot of BJJ self defense classes. The benefits of a GB gym would be the sparring and comp training, depending on how strictly the gym follows the official GB curriculum and class structure.

Gracie U is focused on self defense and you don't do real sparring for quite some time. All that said, once I get back to training I plan to work with a friend who has gone through both the GB and GU programs, and we're going to do the GU material. I actually really like the way GU teaches fundamentals, especially defenses and positional control.
