The combination of sweet batter and tart berries is lovely, and the berries themselves become gooey and syrupy and delicious during baking. I served it with vanilla ice cream and everyone loved it!
I will definitely be making this again! Had friends up to the mountains. Wanted to make something for them that was different, natural, and of course delicious. Besides picking the berries, this was SO easy to make. I threw two small apples and a handful of blueberries in as well. Bought vanilla ice cream and whip cream and everyone was smiling after the first bite.
My only qualm is that this is a crumble, not a cobbler. A cobbler is topped with rounds of biscuit, cookie, or cake dough. Otherwise, this is a great dish. I made this recipe on the 4th of July for a family dinner. I used boysenberries rather than blackberries and lime juice instead of lemon juice. I also doubled the recipe for a 9 x 13 pan.
Since the berries were still somewhat frozen, it needed baking an extra minutes. The butter did pool on top, but eventually baked in. I also added a tsp. It was a huge hit, especially topped with vanilla ice cream. I made this easy, delicious recipe early this morning I had an abundance of assorted fresh berries that needed to get used.
Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries combined made this cobbler one of the best it have baked and eaten. I read one of the reviews that stated the crumb mixture was a wet mess. Based on my experience with this recipe I am of the thought that the baker mixed the egg AND the butter into the dry ingredients which would surely create a sticky mess!
The dry ingredients and the egg did indeed make a lovely, dry, crumbly mixture. I added a light sprinkling of cinnamon on the top before popping it into the oven. The house smelled heavenly! This recipe is a keeper!!
I look forward to making it again with other fruit. Give this great recipe a go. You will not be disappointed! I love how easy this recipe is, very quick to put together. However, I thought it was way too sweet and am surprised by the other comment that recommends adding extra sugar to the blackberries. Loved making this. So easy. We loved it and so did our guests. I made the whipped cream in 15 seconds with my Nutribullet. Can't wait to make this with fresh peaches.
Blackberries , of course were great but didn't think the topping was that good. I have made lots better. This is probably the best cobbler recipe that I have made. Not too sweet or doughy and very easy.
I wish I had doubled the recipe because it dissapeared very quickly. Plan on using fresh peaches tomorrow for a family reunion. Can't believe how simple this was! And it tasted as good or better than cobblers I've made that were difficult. The only thing I would do differently is to maybe add a tad of sugar into the berries themselves. It wouldn't take much more than a tablespoon or two.
Loved this and so did my southern-raise-on-cobblers hubby! Will definitely make it again and use other fruits. Great base cobbler recipe! LOVE the crunch. Im not a big soggy cobbler lover, especially bc those kind mold so quickly. I can't possibly understand how this recipe can be rated 5 stars. Mixing egg in with flour and sugar does NOT make a course meal -- it makes a sticky mess.
It would be much better to eliminate the egg completely and just mix the flour, sugar and butter together. Now this will make a proper coarse meal! Very easy recipe and so delicious I only used half a cup of sugar, plenty sweet enough for me and my family Loved this and have used this recipe for many years. Almost any fruit or berry works well in this. I have used blackberries, blueberries, apples and peaches, and all have turned out well.
I have also used self rising flour which produced a crispy, biscuit-y like topping, which I liked even better. This is both delicious and a huge return on a rather minimal work investment, thus meriting a 5-star rating. Used whole wheat pastry flour in place of AP and you couldn't tell the difference. I used a combination of sweet and tart berries and I did put in the tablespoon of lemon juice which helps brighten the flavor , but with 1 whole cup of sugar in the topping, that was more than sufficient sweetness for me and I am a sugar addict.
The sweet crust contrasted with the semi-tart berries is lovely. However, the butter lake phenomenon is real. I combatted it by cooking for an extra 10 minutes it may have been that long because some of my berries were still partially frozen at the start , until the lake vanished and the cobbler was crispy brown and bubbling all the way to the center. The broiler route others have suggested would probably work too. One of the easiest Blackberry Cobbler recipes you'll ever make.
And so good. The recipe works with fresh peaches too! Like other reviewers, I added a bit of sugar to the berries before adding the topping. This is an awesome receipe. I made it for my husband as it is his favorite; he was so complementry i had to have some myself Well deserving of five stars.
My boyfriend isn't a huge sweet fan, but he loves blackberry cobbler, so I promised him months ago that I would make it for him. I searched so many pages of recipes online and decided after all of the wonderful reviews that I would try this one. It was so easy to make. I omitted the lemon juice due to the lack of it, and it turned out awesome. Thanks, Southern Living!
This was really good! I used cupcakes paper holders though, which turned out great: The only thing I will change next time is mixing the blackberrys into the 'dough'. Definately will make this again!
This was a very delicious and simple recipe. My family enjoyed it. If I would do anything different it would be to toss the blackberries with sugar before putting into baking dish and to broil for 1 minute on low after baking to crisp up topping, as the butter did pool on top as one reviewer said.
I just made this wonderful recipe its so easy which is my favorite part other then it taste so yummy! The only thing I did different was sprinkle sugar on top of blackberries and cooked a little longer to brown the top. One other thing I might try next time is make more crust because that is my favorite part! Chatter Chicken Champs? Is that a local butter or margarine somewhere Does anyone know?? I just made this with blackberries and raspberries for July 4th. Since I wanted something that didn't require much prep time, this fit the bill.
I did add some sugar and flour to the berries for sweetening and thickening, and I added a pinch of salt to the topping mix since most recipes call for some. Ended up baking this a few minutes longer so the top would get nice and brown. This was delicious with whipped cream on top. And the topping got nice and crunchy. My family loved it. I will try this with apples next and add some cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, and brown sugar to the fruit.
I seldom bake because I absolutely hate tedious recipes. This was just my speed! Definitely a keeper! I had never made blackberry cobbler only peach so I looked this up and decided to try it. Took me about 5 minutes to plop it in the oven. SO easy!
And although I did see a little pool of margarine on top, it didn't bother me. It tastes so sweet and yummy. And because it's so easy I'll be bookmarking it and making it often - want to try blueberries next time! So yummy and so easy! Made it for the umpteenth time last weekend but I used blueberries instead of blackberries. I think I like it even better that way! Everyone raved and wanted seconds. Truly Yummy. Awesome and EASY. Will do this over and over again!
My family has enjoyed this cobbler for many yrs. Here at home, Louisiana We have a big vireity of berrys, so, do make it with any berry you want, it's great. This is a delicous cobbler topping that can be used with any fruit. I liked it because the topping was crunchy and flavorful and the fruit doens't end up too sweet. My husband and I loved this recipe. It was delicious. I did sprinkle a little sugar on the berries. I will definitely be making this again. I don't think I used enough butter, because I couldn't get my topping fully wet with the butter drizzled on top.
Other than a few dry bits of topping, it was very tasty. I used half sugar, half splenda and light butter and it still tasted great, but with much better nutritional stats. I can't believe this recipe has so many 5-star reviews.
It was just ok. It was easy, but I wasn't impressed with the results. There are much better recipes out there see 'Blackberry Dumpling Cobbler. The only thing I would change would be to cut the butter down to 4 tablespoons, it pooled a bit on the top and I don't think you would miss it, and it would cut the fat content down a bit. I've made this twice so far and it's been delicious both times, served warm over vanilla bean ice cream.
One suggestion I would make is to cook it minutes, then broil it for 3 minutes or so to get the topping nice and golden. At least for me, the topping never seems quite ready otherwise, and cooking it for longer results in the berry juices attempting a coup d'etat on the topping's territory. Bon appetit! Great topping - I used 1 drained canned blackberries and 1 drained canned bluberries because they are always in the cupboard and it was fabulous.
Talk about easy! I used frozen blackberries, sweetened with sugar and doubled the recipe for a 9X13 pan - my cobbler took a little longer cooking berries were thawed I just took it out of the oven when it was brown on top. Whipped cream was just right after a big meal. This is a winner for sure! I made it with freshly picked blackberries but only had 2 cups at the time so I added 2 cups of blueberries and it was delish!! I think it would be good with any kind of berries. Have some fresh blackberries that I froze for later use and will be pulling this out of the recipe bag in the middle of Winter.
Would make this for a special occasion. This was outrageously good and very, very easy to make. I used a carton of fresh blackberries from the farmer's market and sprinkled them with a little extra sugar before adding the topping.
Served with vanilla ice cream, it's just scrumptious. This is my new go-to cobbler recipe. I have tried to make blackberry cobbler in the past and when I saw this recipe on the cover of Southern Living I knew it was for me. I have served this many times and everyone always loves it. This is now my favorite recipe. I pick my blackberrys in the summer and freeze them in 4 cups individually so they are ready to use. I used fresh berries and I did add a lot of sugar to them.
I doubled the recipe and put it in a 9X I will make again Elegant, easy, delicious. What a great dessert. I would just add a little sugar to the berries.
Did not have it with the whipped creme, will try it with the creme next time. I have made this recipe several times and have been pleased each time.
