It was not in Print Preview, but I had clicked on the File tab to look at the properties earlier today and it was still in that "Backstage" area. Completely forgot about it until I saw comment from Brian Baker.
As soon as I flipped back to the Home tab, all good and able to set print area, rows to repeat at top, etc. Oh my god!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I was trying to get RID of phantom headers and thanks to your guidance, this worked like a charm! Clicked on "Print Titles" icon, had the ability to manipulate the "repeat rows" section and now I won't look like a moron!
I had 2 workbooks open. In Workbook 1 I had the File tab selected. This inhibited Workbook 2 from doing Print Titles. I unselected the File tab from Workbook 1 e. Go back to Workbook 2 and the Print Titles option is no longer grayed out. Thank you Brian. Four years later and the issue persists.
Hopefully now that Excel opens additional windows as new instances by default, the topic will be discussed more often and fixed sooner. I know this is easier said than done, but modern operating systems weren't exactly simple to develop either.
If tools to get this done were part of IDEs, it wouldn't be as far-reaching of an idea. I just discovered, after being extremely frustrated with the same problem, that if you have another Excel file window open or dialog box that is not completely closed out and on an active spreadsheet, you get the same issue. For example: I had three different worksheets open and on one, I had clicked on File, so that large screen with the left arrow inside a circle, Info, New, Open, Save, etc.
On another worksheet I was trying to disable some print titles so I could print a different range, and my original titles were visible, but grayed out, so I couldn't remove them. After deciding to close every worksheet and just open the one I wanted to print, I discovered this open command screen, and once I closed it on that other worksheet, my printing worksheet is now available to change the range, print titles, and anything else that might have been grayed out.
